windshield wipers, Dale Feste Automotive

When you inspect your vehicles windshield wipers on a regular basis, you can determine if there are any issues. Most drivers know to get regular oil changes and rotate their tires. You should also check and top off any other fluids on a regular basis, and make sure that the windshield wipers are in the best condition possible.

Windshield wipers are vital to car safety but are an often overlooked feature on cars.  When it rains or snows, you turn them on to help with visibility and then forget about them.  One of the worst things that can happen in poor driving conditions is to turn on wipers and have them do nothing.  Regular maintenance can seriously limit the probability of that happening. If you notice an issue with the windshield wipers, make sure to have them changed and replaced as soon as possible.

Wipers should never run across a dry windshield, have them operate only on a lubricated surface.  You should control your wipers and always use the washer button when starting from dry. This will help the wipers move across the windshield more efficiently.

Heavy snow or ice can cause your windshield wipers to stick, and if they are stuck badly enough the mechanism that moves them can actually snap, leaving you with a motor that needs replacing and, in some weather, a car that cannot be driven.  Turn on your car ahead of time with the defrost up all the way then make sure to scrape the rest of the windows so you can see properly.

After prolonged rain or snow it’s a good idea to pop up your windshield wipers and use a rag to clean out the gunk that gets trapped there.  This reduces the wear this debris causes to blades and stops it from streaking, and potentially scratching, your windshield.

The purpose of your windshield wipers is to wipe debris from the windshield so you can see.  Every time you go to the gas station you should clean your windshield with the provided squeegee and liquid to keep your windshield at its best.  Don’t forget to run a cloth or your finger over your blades when cleaning the windshield. If you ever notice issues with the windshield wipers, make sure to change them or bring the vehicle in so we can change them for you. This will help to improve the safety as you drive.
